Free Radicals AKA Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)

21 February 2022

Nasty molecules with one or more unpaired electrons. Programmed to destroy everything it comes into contact with.

Our cells produce free radicals naturally through metabolic process’s. The cell also produces antioxidants to neutralise these free radicals.

Antioxidants are unique molecules that neutralise free radicals by sharing an electron to pair with its unpaired electron.

So what does this mean for our skin?

The body is pretty good at naturally maintaining the balance between antioxidants and free radicals however certain factors such as diet, lifestyle and pollution etc can cause a rise in free radicals leading to oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress is the result of the Imbalance between Antioxidants and Free Radicals. Which can lead to cell and tissue damage.

Uncontrolled oxidative stress may lead to a number of skin conditions and accelerate the aging process. It can also trigger the inflammatory response which in turn creates free radicals leading to further oxidative stress.

What might we see?

  • Inflammation
  • Wrinkles
  • Impaired barrier function
  • Pigmentation
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Dullness
  • Dryness

What can we do to help prevent and slow the effects of oxidative stress?

  • Focus on vitamins A,C and E topically
  • SPF daily
  • Diet rich in antioxidants(fruits & vegetables)
  • Reduce stress
  • Exercise
  • No smoking

How well is your skin equipped for the fight against free radicals?
