Vitamin A

25 November 2021

The number 1 Ingredient we reach for when it comes to correcting and fighting the signs of aging. We sometimes forget that it’s also a key component in the correction of all skin conditions such as pigmentary disorders, Acne and Rosacea as well as regulating normal skin function.

So how is it able treat so many things? Vitamin A has the ability to enter not only the cell but the nucleus of the cell. Therefore enabling it to assist with the repair of DNA. DNA Damage being the result of repeated exposure to a number of Extrinsic and Intrinsic factors on a daily basis.

Correcting and Maintaining our cells DNA promotes healthy cell function and healthy cell function means healthy skin function. Increasing cell turnover, regulating sebum production, stimulating the fibroblast for collagen and elastin synthesis and helping fade pigmentation.

Our cells have specific receptors that enable the passive transfer of vitamin A into the cell. When we use vitamin A these receptors switch on, when we don’t they become inactive. This is important to remember that when starting with vitamin A it’s often best too start slow and build in so we minimise the effects of a retinoid response, flushing, flakiness, dryness and sensitivity. Now don’t get me wrong this can often be the desired response as it means it’s doing it’s job. However your client may not be so impressed with the excessive down time. So always remember to educate your clients on correct product usage, how often and what to expect when recommending a Vitamin A.

There are many forms of Vitamin A, some being more potent than others in their delivery and their effect on the skin. Determining what form to prescribe can be rather tricky. We need to take into consideration a number of factors such as the skin concern and it’s severity, the age of the client, client lifestyle and overall skin health just to name a few. Some skins will require and can tolerate a potent form whilst others may need a gentler and less invasive approach.

Are your clients using Vitamin A? Or more importantly are you? 😉
